Regenerative Homestead

At Moea Homestead, a regenerative homestead is more than a way of farming—it's a way of living. Rooted in our heritage and sustained by nature, we honor the wisdom of those who came before us while nurturing the land for generations to come.

Our vision is grounded in holistic regenerative food systems—an approach to growing, sharing, and enjoying food that brings together environmental stewardship, social well-being, and economic resilience to strengthen the health of our ecosystems and our communities.

We work in harmony with nature, preserve traditional knowledge, and embrace thoughtful innovation to replenish the land rather than deplete it.

Holistic Regenerative Principles in Practice

Minimize Soil Disturbance

We minimize soil disturbance by using no-till raised beds to maintain soil health and improve its ability to retain water and nutrients.

Cover the Soil Surface

To maintain soil nutrients, we use living plants, organic manure, or mulch to retain moisture and protect against rain and overheating.

Keep Living Roots in the soil

We keep living roots in the soil for as much of the year as possible as they provide organic matter to the soil, improve soil structure, and help retain moisture.

Grow a diverse crops

We incorporate different plant species to promote a diverse ecosystem to prevent pests and diseases, improves soil health, and can make the land more resilient to changes in weather.

Practice Rotational Grazing

We host neighbors' livestock to create a more dynamic and productive system, as animals can help to cycle nutrients, manage vegetation, and improve soil health through their manure.

Waste Reduction

Waste is treated as a resource. We turn crop residues, animal manure, and food scraps into nutrient-dense compost. This process stabilizes nutrients, sequesters carbon, and improves soil microbial activity.

Resource Efficiency Optimization

We've integrated smart irrigation systems to complement our solar-powered horticultural irrigation system, efficiently harvest water, and minimize water consumption, resulting in resilient and high crop yields.

Knowledge Transfer Mechanisms

Through our heritage, we understand our local environment, including how to manage soil, vegetation, and climate. This indigenous knowledge has been passed down for generations, and we continue to share it with the next generation.
